SAM Americana Sampler // Chris Staples

  • Saint Albans Museum 9 Church Street Saint Albans City, VT, 05478 United States (map)

SAM Americana Sampler is a curated series featuring touring musicians whose storytelling and artistry speak to a distinctly American experience. Sponsored by Maquam Wines, we are pleased to present this intimate solo performance on opening night of The Vermont Maple Festival.

Chris Staples

“Chris Staples is a gifted storyteller who reveals life's greatest mysteries in humanity's smallest moments.” -NPR’s All Songs Considered

Chris Staples is an American indie rock musician originally from Pensacola, Florida, long based in Seattle, Washington. Since the release of his first album in 2001, Staples’ core strengths have grown into a subtle brilliance – innate melody, intense allegory, and the deceptive sinew behind songs that could easily be dismissed as merely quiet.

There are no casual Chris Staples fans. Play his music during a road trip with friends and inevitably someone will ask, “Who is this?” And a lifelong fan is born. Such is the unaffected power of these songs, of this voice. A phenomenally dexterous guitarist, Staples has spent much of his career so far as a backing musician for other artists. Over the years he’s played with J. Tillman, later known as Father John Misty, and toured the world as a member of Telekinesis. [NPR Live Sessions]
