From the Collection #16: Vermont Sunset

An impressionistic painting of a sunset with deep purple and green tones.

"Vermont Sunset" by Whitney Cushing. This painting was inspired by the artist's memories of working as a camp counselor at Kill Kare as a boy.

Cushing was born and raised in St. Albans. During World War II, he served in Italy as a radar navigator for the Air Force. After his military service, he relocated to Palm Beach, Florida, where he became a prolific artist. He worked in a wide range of media, including oils, pastels, ink and watercolors, and mostly created impressionistic scenes inspired by the world around him. Cushing passed away in 1993 at the age of 76.

Black-and-white photograph of Whitney Cushing as a thin older man with a moustache and a brimmed hat.
