From the Archives #32: The First Vermont Volunteers
This photo and the accompanying caption were originally posted to our Facebook page (link to external site) on May 19, 2023.
The First Vermont Volunteers, soldiers in the Spanish-American War, at Fort Monroe, Virginia, 1898. The only two men we have identified in this photo are Col. John Mims of St. Albans (center of the second row) and Frank Greene (fourth from the left in the back row), who went on to become the editor of the St. Albans Messenger and Vermont's Congressional Representative. Unfortunately, he was mortally wounded by stray gunfire from a shootout between revenue agents and bootleggers in Washington, DC in 1924.
