Children’s Programs

CREATE (Crafts, Reading, Exploration, Art, Technology, and Education) is our initiative to provide high-quality educational programming for children and families. The activities we offer under the CREATE umbrella make learning hands-on, engaging, and most of all fun!

CREATE is…

Weekly Children’s Activities

Every summer during our open season, we hold 10 weeks of free Saturday morning children’s activities. Each week’s activity is connected to one of our exhibit rooms or displays. Past activities have included train-themed crafts, scrapbooking, cookie decorating, historic games, and live animal demonstrations. Check back later for the full schedule of events for 2024. 2024 programming is funded in part by a grant from the Vermont Community Foundation (link to external site).

CREATE Kids’ Cove

Opening in May 2024, the CREATE Kid's Cove is the first exhibit space just for children at the museum. Themed around the St. Albans Bay, the Cove will provide young museum-goers with the opportunity to learn about ecological conservation, the Bay's native species, and the Bay's impact on St. Albans history from its first inhabitants, the indigenous Abenaki people, to the modern day. It will contain a variety of hands-on activities and spaces for children to explore, including a book nook, an early settler’s cabin, a STEAM center, and sensory and creative exploration areas. The CREATE Kids’ Cove is funded by a grant from the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation (link to external site), as well as donations from the Rotary Club of St. Albans (link to external site) and the Garibay family.

The Book Nook

Located in the second-floor Historic Classroom, the titles in our Book Nook for children and young adults are constantly rotating and curated to complement our exhibits and displays. Grab a book and get cozy!

Selected titles include Thirteen Moons on Turtle’s Back by Joseph Bruchac, Your Name is a Song by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, The Night I Freed John Brown by John Michael Cummings, and Knots on a Counting Rope by Bill Martin Jr.
